Unfortunately, even a new washing machine can get a strange frowsy smell. How to get rid of washing machine smell and to avoid its appearing again? There can be a lot of reasons for smells and mustiness, but everything comes down to the only cause: it’s the bacteria that proliferate inside the washer. It can be mold fungi or bacteria; but they’re the only reason for bad smell. In order to remove these “guests”, you have to know where they appear often.
They may appear anywhere, but more often it’s a place when they feel especially free. For example:
A detergent drawer
A retaining ring of a hatch
A drain hose filter and a hose itself
The bottom of a tank, where’s always some water remained
A heating element having some scale all over it
Check out all these places and wash them up with some chlorinated substances, in order to kill every ill-smelling bacterial deposit. The bad smell will disappear as soon as you find out the reason.
Loading hatch cuff
The emergence of fungi, the accumulation of dirt and soap plaque
Clean or replace the cuff of a loading hatch
Mould, accumulation of unused detergent
Clean or replace a detergent drawer
Waste water drain hose
Check up and clean if necessary
Check up and clean
Clog, accumulation of tissue fibers and fine dust
Clean or renew if necessary
The appearance of plaque from unused detergent or conditioner
Clean with lemon acid
Why it happens?
Sometimes it happens with washers, whose users prefer washing with low temperature and short time rinse. Low temperature water doesn’t kill any bacteria: they remain inside.
If after washing the machine wasn’t dried out, it’s a perfect possibility for bacteria to live there: it’s dark and wet inside. And after that you find out, that your washing machine smells like a sewer.
And there is another two factors that lead to bacteria or fungus plaque formation, are excessive use of rinse aid and the use of low-quality washing powder.
Musty smell can also appear when you wash our clothes with crumbs in pockets, a cookie, a candy, or even a paper napkin. Soaked paper sticks together in a loose ball, which becomes the perfect substrate for mold or bacteria. Already in a week you can feel a bad smell.
Scale is another cause of the smell of mold. For example, you have cleaned the machine with some anti-scale solution, and pieces of lime crumbled down on the bottom of a heating element. If they remain on the tank bottom, it won’t be easy to get rid of different smells.
The last reason for unpleasant smells a washing machine is incorrect connection of a drain hose to the sewerage system. Sometimes clumsy and inexperienced fitters attach the hose in a way that all odors from the sewer pipe go into the washer. Check the hose connection, if it smells bad inside of your washer. Sometimes it is enough to reinstall it to get rid of the unpleasant smell.
How to clean a washer?
All the interior of the washing machine should be thoroughly washed with a disinfectant. You can buy special solutions, which purpose is precisely to remove the unpleasant smell from your washing machine. But it’s not necessary: it is possible to make the “treatment” withsimple chlorine bleach.
If you find a stale black plaque on the walls of the parts of the washing machine, wash them well and dry.The old retaining ring can be replaced if it is heavily damaged by mold. The same should be done with a drain hose if it cannot be washed.
To get rid of the odor from the washing machine, you need to turn on a long wash program, without any laundry, at a maximum temperature, adding bleach or detergent for dishwashers. After a full cycle ending turn on the quick rinse to wash out the inside of your washing machine. Most likely, after this treatment, your machine will no longer be the source of the smell of mold and rot.
How to avoid that in future?
After each wash, you need to wipe dry the interior of the machine, remove and wash the detergent drawer. Pay special attention to a retainingring.
From time to time clean the drain hose filter. Very often moldy smell goes from organic residues accumulated there.
1-2 times per month clean the heating elements. Use a glass of vinegar or lemon acid. The acid should be placed inside the drum and then start the wash cycle at a maximum temperature.
Do not use too much conditioner or cleaning agent. Its remnants are deposited on the walls of the tank and become a substrate for mold.
These simple tips will help you to keep your washer fresh and clean.
