Portable air conditioners are popular now. They have its own specific differences, advantages and disadvantages. Such a “family” includes a not lot of models, but each has characteristic differences. Before you come to the shop for choosing a portable AC, you should know the difference between models. For example, there are portable air conditioners without any ductworks, and there are mobile systems with corrugated pipe. So which should be preferred?
Classification of portable air conditioners
There are 2 modifications of portable AC:
- Split-systems mounted on no less than 50 cm above the floor. This category also includes so-called wall-ceiling devices, that may be installed in ceiling zone as well as at the lower part of the wall. Such a location assumes the airflow forwarded on the floor, but not on the human, so it doesn’t endanger the health.
- Mobile systems with a ductworks of without it. The main advantage of this type of AC is the opportunity to transfer the device from one room to another. You can’t do that with a split-system. Mobile AC you can also take to your country house or another apartment.
Depending on purpose, installation specifics and budget people choose optimal device. But this equipments doesn’t have fundamental differences. They only work in two domes: heating or cooling. They are operated with remote control, equipped with safety systems and systems of controlling the compressor work and air direction. There are models among them with antibacterial treatment, filtration and air ionization.
Dangerous for the users and for the environment freon replaced with safety refrigerant in recent models. New floor air conditioners for homes are no longer bulky designed, they don’t spoil anymore the aesthetic appearance of the apartment where they work.
Advantages of stationary floor-standing AC systems
It consists of two blocks such as a split-system. In fact it is a split system too, but a small indoor unit placed at the floor and fixed to the wall. The Installation is performed in a standard way: the outdoor unit mounted outside the building: on the roof or on the wall using special brackets. Also it can be located at the regular aired veranda, loggia or balcony.
The main condition – the fresh air from outside, so the outside unit cannot be installed in the basement and in the rooms without ventilations.
The inner part is equipped with a floating blinds and bars. With the help of tangential fans, vertical blinds and horizontal flaps the direction of the two air streams formed, thereby circulation optimizing. Any modification can be operated with only one feed stream, but double stream creates the most favorable temperature for users.
About mobile Floor air conditioners
mobile floor air conditioner with ducts
Mobile floor AC systems have much in common with window air conditioners. All working parts are also installed in a single body, the heated air mass assigned out of the room through the window. Portable floor air conditioners is preferred by people who do not need, for whatever reasons, the fixed installation, if they plan to frequent crossings for example.
Owners don’t have to think about how to install the mobile AC. Such a process is simple and not time-consumin, but there are some problems: providing the path for discharging the heated air to the outside, which can be carried out not only through the corrugated hose derived into the window, but also through a specially hole realized in the wall.
Their main disadvantage is the relatively high noise level, because most “resounding” part cannot be separated from the system and use outside. Some versions don’t have system of automatic condensate drain, which is why the water from the tray user have to pour himself.
TIP. Get a model with a large capacity for collecting the condensed moisture. If there is a small tray, you will need to pour it often, because the AC will be turned off automatically when the tray will be full of water.
Generation of mobile units without ductwork
Duct hoses represent a disadvantage, so why not give them up? Fortunately, there is a future-proof solution. Simple work principle of this floor AC type is based on the ability of substances to give or receive the thermal energy during transformation of the state of aggregation:
- At the lowest part of the vaporization equipment body water container is located. Water from the reservoir pumped and supplied to the porous filter for wetting;
- The hot air from the room is directed to the wetted porous filter;
- The air mass goes through the wet filter and cools, molecules of water on the surface of the filter pass into the gaseous phase state.
There is no condensation in such systems, because they only generate cold and don’t produce heat at all. If there is no condensation so there is no need to use special tray and drainage tubes. As the heat doesn’t accumulates so pipes for transferring heated air are not needed too. So, any complications with the installation and movement of such mobile evaporative techniques just cannot be.
However, there is a minus, which is easy to guess for people who know how the outdoor air-conditioner of this category works. The stock of water in the tank will need to be constantly replenished. Special indicator will signal when the need arises.
To make the device work fine it is better to open a window leaf for the air inlet. It will work great in the rooms or offices with a ventilation system.
