The new smartphone of the Chinese manufacturer Huawei P20 due to its design resembles Apple device – iPhone X. It has a similar arrangement of cameras and black line on the front panel, where the cameras and microphone are located. After the release of the camera testing studio (for example, DxOmark), this flagship was immediately named as the best cameraphone. Let’s get what the new Chinese manufacturer created and why does P20 get 3 cameras?
Differences between Huawei P20 and P20 Pro
P series was always positioned as a flagship – it includes only the best gadgets of the Chinese brand. However, earlier Huawei released the junior and senior version with the prefix Plus, but today we can see the older model with the prefix Pro. Note that the Huawei P20 Pro received a significant difference – the third camera on the back of the case and improved parameters.
The main gadget (P20) is equipped with chipsets of the latest generation – HiSilicon Kirin processor. It also has only 2 cameras, a glass case and an Android 8.1 OS.
New Huawei didn’t get fundamentally changes. Samsung has the best screens (Amoled), and Huawei always uses IPS-matrixes in its devices and does not buy OLED-displays from South Korean partners, as Apple does. The new P20 received a good-quality IPS screen with a 19: 9 aspect ratio. This solution is possible due to reducing the thickness of the upper frame, but the “island” for front camera and conversational dynamics is remained.
Resolution at the diagonal of 5.8 inches – 2240 × 1080 points (FullHD +). The screen is good, but it doesn’t have fundamentally changes.
Performance and battery
The P20 and P20 Pro have the same chipsets as the previous flagship – Huawei Mate 10 Pro. This is a branded Kirin 970 with 8 cores. There are four 1.8-GHz Cortex-A53 cores that are responsible for energy savings. The other 4 cores of Cortex-A73 – productive blocks that will be connected when high processing power is required. Also, the flagship received a graphics accelerator Mali-G72 with 12 video processors and a coprocessor i7.
4 GB of RAM is not enough for a powerful flagship, but the built-in memory is as much as 128 GB. But there is no memory card slot.
The battery remained a classic capacity of 3400 mAh. It’s hard to say how long it will last, but the phone will be able to “live” for a day without recharging. And yes, the processor supports Huawei Super Charge – fast charging technology.
Standard model of P20 received two main modules – with resolutions of 12 and 20 megapixels. The first one is colored with aperture f / 1.6, the second one is monochrome with f / 1.8 diaphragm. Near the lens there is an inscription Leica, which hints at joint cooperation. Traditionally, Huawei cameras, created in conjunction with Leica, make great shots with a wide dynamic range.
Two modules work in pairs: one captures the light, the other – the color. Then 2 frames are combined, and the user gets a snapshot with details of objects in the dark and light areas of the scene simultaneously.
But the most interesting begins with Huawei P20 Pro – it has an additional camera. The flagship became the first serial smartphone with 3 cameras. Perhaps earlier there were some attempts by other manufacturers to implement something like this, but only Huawei done it well.
One of the three modules received a huge resolution of 40 megapixels (aperture f / 1.8). Thanks to it, the phone can make large frames with a resolution of 7296×5472 pixels. The second module is the same as in the P20, with a resolution of 20 megapixels and aperture f / 1.6 – it takes pictures in black and white and extends the dynamic range, improves the transmission of colors in halftones.
The third – with a resolution of 8 megapixels and aperture f / 2.4. It is equipped with a lens with a 3x zoom, but the function works only in strong light. In low light, the system switches to the digital zoom.
The advantage of the P20 Pro camera is the huge pixel size (about 2 microns), which makes the smartphone unique – there are no other such device on the market. Also it is able to change the ISO value from 100 to 51200. In most devices the range is much narrower (up to 3200 or 6400). The camera in the P20 Pro is smart – it determines what is in the frame and sets certain shooting parameters. If the user directs the lens to the forest with a clear blue sky, the system activates the template with the “Clear Sky” settings. As a result, the picture will gets details in the light and dark section of the frame with the forest.
The camera can record HD-content at 960 FPS. FullHD record is possible at 240 fps, 4K at 120 FPS.
Examples of photos on the camera Huawei P20 Pro
According to DxOMark rating, the Chinese flagship camera is ahead of its competitors – iPhone X, Google Pixel 2, Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. The best results the camera demonstrates in bright light: the widest dynamic range among all smartphones. Noises in light and dark areas are excluded. This makes the gadget ideal for shooting complex scenes.
Autofocus works quickly and reliably, the color is transmitted correctly, but the loss of saturation and the appearance of weak artifacts may be on photo. All images below are clickable and open at full resolution.
The taken on the camera Huawei P20 Pro photo has pleasant colors and detailing on the whole area.
With low light, the device provides low noise and high detail, the white balance is transmitted accurately, autofocus works quickly. This makes the phone an ideal device for simple shooting in low light.
Scaling works cool, and when the third camera module (with good light) is triggered with an optical zoom, the final picture turns out to be noiseless and detailed. Below is an example of a photo without zoom and with a 3x image magnification.
The Bokeh effect presents and thanks to an additional monochrome module, a wide DD is achieved even in portrait mode. Minor artifacts that are almost invisible to the human eye can be present, but these are trifles. The blurring between the object and the background is smooth – this is the main thing. Also, the smartphone blurs and the foreground image, leaving in focus only the object of shooting (person).
Also, the P20 Pro is able to cope with sophisticated backlighting – the camera captures even bright details of the background. Here is an example of two images taken on the P20 Pro and Apple iPhone X. Look at the lighted background in the window.
Obviously, taking photp opposite the light source is better with the Huawei P20 Pro. It makes the flagship one of the best cameraphones in 2018. According to DxOmark, this phone’s camera is even better than the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus.
This will sound pathetic, but Huawei and Leica managed to make a revolution in the world of mobile cameras, as Google did it later. Brands together created a great cameraphone. Power and some unique functionality such as scanning the face of the owner – it’s all unimportant when such a unique smartphone with the largest pixel size of the matrix exists.
