Comparison of displays

Let’s start with iPhone! Well known Retina displays technology is used here. The device got a good screen with a diagonal of 5.5 inches and the following parameters:

  1. Widescreen display with LED backlight;
  2. Contrast ratio 1300: 1;
  3. Brightness of 625 cd / m2;
  4. Two-domain pixels that increase viewing angles.

Compared with the screen in the 6S, the brightness, contrast, and viewing angles are slightly changed here. 3D Touch technology was implemented, thanks to which the screen perceives the force of pressing. But there are no serious revolutionary changes in the display in the seventh iPhone in comparison with its predecessor – the sixth. Yes, the screen is amazing, which is evident from the characteristics. Even in the bright sun, the reserve of brightness will suffice for comfortable text reading. There are no significant flaws in the display, and this is perhaps one of the best screens among all existing smartphone displays. But definitely not the best.

With the release of Samsung Galaxy S8 leadership in the part of the screens has passed to this flagship. After the report of DisplayMate, there is no doubt about it. Here is not all the list of advantages that the Galaxy S8 has:

  1. Technology to improve the picture. The image without the HDR-component turns into an HDR image.
  2. The maximum brightness value is 1000 nits.
  3. A separate chip for implementing Always On Display technology, which will now consume much less energy. Although the previous consumption for this technology was only 1-2% of the total battery life.
  4. Several light sensors, which allows the system to determine the conditions of illumination better and, depending on this, adjust the brightness of the screen.
  5. Color gamut DCI-P3 Color.
  6. Customization for the user. That is, the display remembers the user’s manual settings in a particular application and under certain lighting conditions, and then installs them from memory.

High contrast, maximum viewing angles and other “standard” advantages are attached. This is not the entire list of merits, published in the report DisplayMate.

Also important: Samsung introduces a new term, indicating the format of their flagship screen – Infinity Display. This is a non-standard size of display – extended. Its diagonal is 5.8 inches, the resolution is QHD + (2960×1440). In the settings user can change the resolution to QHD or FullHD. In theory, it can reduce the load on the processor and battery, although this in principle is not particularly necessary, because screen sets a record for battery consumption – for its large diagonal, brightness and huge resolution, it consumes a record low energy.

And now the main thing is – the perfect SuperAMOLED matrix, which has received some improvements in comparison with the matrixes of the previous generation of smartphones. Some manufacturers (like Apple, too) are trying to get this technology. In comparison with the screens of previous phones (also AMOLED), the brightness adjustment technology was improved and the Always On Display mode got a separate chip, the brightness became higher, color rendering – more accurate.

The white color on the S7 Edge near the real white on the S8 seems yellowish. In fact, the flagship S8 received a revolutionary display, that doesn’t have analogues.

Performance. Apple A10 Fusion vs Exynos 8895

Let’s start with the main thing! In the official benchmark blog (performance testing program) Antutu has a rating of smartphones in terms of performance. Today (May 2017) it looks like:

  1. iPhone 7 Plus (177220 points)
  2. Samsung Galaxy S8 + (172640 points)
  3. Samsung Galaxy S8 (172636 points)

Then there are 47 more phones that are not interesting for us. The leader of this rating is the flagship iPhone 7 Plus with a result of 177220 points. Just slightly behind the Korean Galaxy S8 +, gaining 172640 points, and this is an excellent result even for the flagship.

The fact remains: the Apple A10 Fusion processor is slightly faster than the Exynos 8895. But note that performance in the benchmark is the result of the joint work of all components and software. The S8 uses a QHD display that requires more CPU resources than a FullHD screen. Also, the optimization of the system plays a role, and the iPhones have always been famous for its iOS. In this regard, the iPhone 7 Plus has an advantage.

A few words about the new Exynos 8895 chip. It is made on a 10-nm process LPE FinFET, so it is characterized by high energy efficiency. Chip is focused on machine learning, development of AI, work with 4K-content and virtual reality glasses. This explains such a huge resolution of display. Exynos 8895 has 8 cores, 4 of which are powerful Exynos M2 and 4 weak ones – to save energy – Cortex-A53. Compared with the previous Exynos 8890 chip, the 8895 model is much faster. Previous Galaxy S7 on the Exynos 8890 processor scored 140 thousand points.

Conclusion: we do not have a winner in terms of smartphone performance. After all, the advantage of the flagship of the iPhone 7+ in 5 thousand points is so miserable that it is difficult to call it an advantage. In practice, it will be Imperceptibly.


iPhone 7+ is known for its camera. The Samsung S8 has also a good sensor, but this is not its strongest side. About everything in order.

Unlike the camera in iPhone 7 (without the prefix Plus), 2 sensors are used it this flagship: one telephoto lens, the other – wide-angle. User can choose which camera to use. But in general 2 cameras work together: thanks to the second sensor you can imitate a shallow depth of field, which in practice will give a cool blurry background. Similar photos could do only mirror cameras and Huawei P9 with proprietary Leica optics. Now it is available to the seventh iPhone and the same Huawei, but now it’s P10. Also, 2 sensors take more light, and this affects the reduction of the amount of noise in the photo.

But most importantly – iPhone 7+ is able to shoot video in 4K resolution at a speed of 60 frames per second. Demonstration of the video:

Note. Two of the three photo examples are made at night. But it may seem that photos were made during the day. 2 sensors perfectly “catch” light and have the widest dynamic range. Even the clouds are visible on night shots.

Of course, with a large zoom, it’s easy to see the noise on the photo. In general, the camera is good here, it gives a clean and beautiful picture in perfect light. With a slight deviation from ideal shooting conditions, there may be noise even though the noise cancellation system works.

Compared to the predecessor of the Galaxy S7, the camera in the figure-eight received no cardinal changes. Of course, thanks to the increased processor performance, DualPixel’s focus fires instantly, the processing speed of the image grows. Also, the sensor got its memory, serial shooting in Durst Mode is very fast. Now there is a multiframe technology: the smartphone makes 3 shots and connects them together. That is, the blurred section of the image can be replaced with a piece from another picture, more clear.

As in the case of the iPhone, it wa cannot say that in S8 the camera has reached a new level. It seems that here is the same 12-megapixel sensor from Sony, but with improved parameters. Yes, there is strides in terms of photos, but small.

It is difficult to single out the winner in this pair. The image quality is approximately equal, so we cannot give a victory to any smartphone. Judge by yourself by examples of photos.


I do not want to write a long time about the autonomy of smartphones and show dry numbers. Let’s just say: with moderate use, both phones can survive 1.5 days, with active – one day. Every evening the flagships will have to be put on charge. Thanks to the quick charging function, this should not be a problem, because up to 100% the phones charge for only 90 minutes. 50% charge rushes for some half an hour. So in terms of autonomy, both flagships are good.

Why S8 and S8 + better than Apple’s flagship?

You know, if earlier the phones from Apple were perceived as something exclusive, status, emphasizing the good taste of the owner, today Samsung smartphones got such initiative. From the image point of view, Samsung is better, but this is only a subjective opinion.

Some advantages of the new Korean flagships:

  1. Fast and wireless charging;
  2. Large amount of disk storage + memory card slots;
  3. Face and iris scanner;
  4. Special mode for working on large monitors (DeX);
  5. VR support (the iPhone does not have it);
  6. Great earphones in the kit, created by AKG. In terms of sound quality, they outperform the Apple headset;
  7. Revolutionary display with a much higher resolution and a diagonal.

The appearance of “eights” ин Samsung has greatly changed the mobile device market. But who knows … maybe the new revolution will be made by Apple with its new iPhone 8 – they are already rumored.
